The Hillwood Soccer Club is a non-profit, volunteer-run club which organizes soccer practices and games for children aged 5 through 18. It is one of 13 clubs affiliated with Seattle Youth Soccer Association. SYSA is affiliated with Washington State Youth Soccer Association. The club covers the City of Shoreline west of I-5 (145th Street to 205th Street and Puget Sound to I-5). It has no office but messages can be left at 542-3353.There are general meetings, to which all parents are welcome to attend, on the second Wednesday of March through June and August through November at the Shoreline Center.
The Hillwood Soccer Club is dedicated to providing a safe and positive experience where children can learn the game of soccer, sportsmanship, and teamwork. A child's self-esteem and enjoyment of the game is more important than winning at the recreational level. Teams are usually formed on a neighborhood basis: with children who attend the same school or live in the same neighborhood. When possible this concept is continued as more players are added to a team. Boys and girls play on separate teams.
Micro level is U-6 though U-8 where the teams and fields are small. Mod level is U-9 and U-10 where the team size increases, some game rules change and the game fields are considerably larger. Macro level is the older teams where the play is regulation youth soccer and the fields are full sized . There may be a select team for boys and for girls in each age group starting at U-11. The select coaches are approved by the FC Shoreline Board. Their tryouts are in late March and the leagues are more competitive. All players are expected to get significant playing time: equal time for micro and U-9 teams and at least half a game on average for older recreational teams.
All parents are expected to contribute to the organization of the team as coach, manager (coordinate the parents), assistant coach, club volunteer (assist the club as a whole), uniforms, telephone, snack schedule, plan party and awards, etc. They need to get their child to and from practices and games on time and provide game snacks if requested. Parents are responsible for finding their team's coach: a volunteer from their own ranks or a friend or teen soccer player. Coaches are provided with an age-appropriate book on coaching and soccer rules, and Hillwood and other soccer organizations have many coaching clinics.
The equipment for a player consists of a ball, rubber-cleated shoes, shin guards, shorts and a T-shirt or jersey. Micro and U-9 players keep the shirts and there are no requirements for shorts or socks. Teams U10 and above teams may purchase their own uniforms. Jerseys must be a combination of black and gold. For those teams not wanting to purchase uniforms the club will provide gold and black jerseys which must be returned to the club at the end of the season or when a player leaves a team. Black shorts are part of the uniform and obtained by the player. Hillwood sells black and gold uniform socks.
