SYSA Spring Soccer
Frequently Asked Questions

SYSA's Spring Soccer League started in 2002!   As the league continues to grow and more players participate, it's important to keep in mind the spirit of Spring Soccer -- a game focused on the kids. If you have unanswered questions after reading this FAQ, please contact us at seattleyouthsoccer@yahoo.com.

Please Note: Playing on a spring team does not affect your fall soccer team. On occasion, players find new friends to play with during the spring, and want to play with them again in the fall. Most SYSA clubs do not permit this kind of player movement in the fall as it comes very close to looking like select soccer.  Recreational teams must be formed by club registrars in order to preserve the "non-select" nature of recreational soccer.

Most Common Questions about Spring Soccer

How many players are on the field at one time?
There has been some confusion about the number of players on the field at one time. Please follow these guidelines:
U7: Total of 3 players on the field; no goal keeper
U8: Total of 4 players on the field; 3 plus a goal keeper
U9: Total of 5 players on the field; 4 plus a goal keeper
U10: Total of 6 players on the field; 5 plus a goal keeper

Why does my team have multiple games against the same opponent?
It is the most fun and most productive for players to play against teams of comparable abillity. In places where enought teams have identified themselves as strong, we have placed them in the same group. We think it is better to have teams play the same team twice than to play different teams but have lopsided scores due to a disparity in team ability.

When will the schedules be ready?
They will be posted here in mid-March.

What teams are registered and which teams have room for more players?
To see registered teams click here
Players needing a team look for a team that has room for more players and email the team contact listed.  The team can add you to their roster.

Are dogs allowed at Spring Soccer?
NO - dogs are not allowed at athletic fields in Seattle and Shoreline.

Do teams have uniforms?
Teams supply their own uniforms. They can use anything, including something as simple as a t-shirt, or a jersey from a previous season.

Who can play?
Spring Soccer is primarily designed for registration by teams. Ninety-five percent of the players in spring soccer play on the same team they played on in the fall. Even players who have never played in Seattle Youth Soccer Association's fall leagues are welcome. Last year, for example, approximately 12 CYO teams played in the Spring League. All players must be registered with SYSA. If you played in the fall in SYSA on a club team, you are already registered. If not, then see "How do I register?" below.

When are the games played?
Spring Soccer games are played on Sundays only. Our scheduler is currently working on acquiring fields for the games.

What time are games played?
Games are played between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., depending on the placement of your team in the schedule. Special requests for times can't be honored.  We do put as many games in the afternoon as possible.

What age child can play?
Any child 6 years or older by July 31 of this year is eligible to play.

What is the cost?
Each team pays $200 - 300 (depending on the team age) to register. The coach or team manager makes the payment at the time of registration. The average cost per player is usually $25, depending on the number of players. It is the responsibility of the coach or the person who registers the team to receive payment from the individual players. Financial assistance is availalbe. Contact seattleyouthsoccer@yahoo.com for inquiries.

Are there team practices in Spring Soccer?
Most Spring Soccer teams do not practice due to a lack of available fields. Seattle playing fields in spring are primarily allocated for baseball, lacrosse, boys high school soccer and boys and girls select soccer. Please do not request practice fields from Seattle Youth Soccer Association, or directly from Seattle Park or Schools, or Shoreline Parks or Schools. SYSA works hard just to acquire the playing field time we have.

How many players on a team?
U-7 plays 3 per side with no goalie (recommended roster size 6, max allowed 7);
U-8 plays 4 per side including a goalie (recommended roster size 8, max allowed 9);
U-9 plays 5 per side including a goalie (recommended roster size 9, max allowed 9);
U-10 plays 6 per side (recommended roster size 10, max allowed 12);
U-11 and older play 8 players per side (recommended roster size 14, max allowed 16).

How does an individual player who WAS NOT on an SYSA team last fall register?
After finding a spring team the player will need to register (sysa.org -- member login -- register now -- players new to SYSA).  The registration cost is $20 to cover insurance and you must submit a birth certificate.

How does an individual player who WAS on an SYSA team last fall register?
You do not register at sysa.org.   You find a spring team and ask the coach/manager to add your legal name and date of birth to the online spring roster.

I'm not sure I was on an SYSA team in the fall
If you were on a fall team within any of the SYSA clubs you were on a fall SYSA team.  The SYSA clubs are Ballard Soccer Club, Beacon Hill Soccer Club, Capitol Hill Soccer Club, Emerald City FC, FC Shoreline, Hillwood Soccer Club, Lake City Soccer Club, Liga Rainier Soccer Club, LVR Soccer Club, Magnolia Soccer Club, McGilvra Soccer Club, Mount Baker/Lakewood Soccer Club, Queen Anne Soccer Club, Seattle United FC, Shorelake Soccer Club, Woodland Soccer Club.

How do I register a team that didn't play in the fall?
You will need to notify the SYSA Registrar (seattleyouthsoccer@yahoo.com) when you are ready to register your team. The registrar will give you a team number. You will then register the team, add the players' full legal names and birth dates to the online roster, and pay the fee online. Any players who were not on a fall team within Seattle Youth Soccer will need to register separately as players new to SYSA and pay the $20 insurance fee. No further registration will be necessary for those who were on a fall SYSA team.

What do I do if my team's coach does not want to play spring soccer, but some of my friends do?
Individual players who want to play should try to find a spring team in their club, a spring team on which their friends are playing, or form their own team and get a parent or coach to register the team.  Look at list of registered teams to see which teams need more players.  If you find a team ask the coach to add you to the roster.  Remember the age for a spring team will be one year older than your fall was.

Which age bracket will my team be playing?
Your team and players play at the upcoming fall age bracket during spring spring. So if your team played U-7 last fall, they will be playing U-8 in the Spring Soccer league.

When does spring soccer start and when does it end?
The season will start in late March  and be completed in June. Each team will be scheduled for eight games.

Can Select teams play in Spring Soccer?
Yes, but they must play up at least one age level, based on the upcoming fall season. So if the team played at the U-11 level in the fall, they must play at the U-13 level in Spring Soccer.

Can overaged players and different genders play on my team?
Spring Soccer does not have mixed gender teams. Players must also be age appropriate for the teams they play on.

Can a player play on two different Spring Soccer teams?
Yes.

What are the differences between Spring Soccer and Fall Soccer?
Spring Soccer is more like an old-fashioned pick-up game. Kids are playing mostly for the joy of playing soccer. The biggest differences are: no practices, just games; scores are not recorded, and no standings are kept or posted; games are refereed by coaches from the teams playing; the fields are shorter and the teams smaller. The focus is and should be on the kids having fun.

Is a Medical Release Form necessary?
Yes.  The coach/manager should have a signed medical release for each player at all games and practices.  There are two ways to get a medical release form
1. The coach/manager may use the form from the fall season.
2. The Player can download a medical release form, sign it and give it to the coach.

Are games played on Easter and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend?
No, we usually do not schedule any games on Easter Sunday or the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.  We do schedule games on Mothers Day and Fathers Day.  There are not enough weeks available in the spring season to avoid scheduling games during some of the school spring breaks.

This is the place to play in Spring!  We are looking forward to seeing the kids on the fields with rosy cheeks and lots of yelling and screaming.  And for you adults, can you think of a better entertainment deal? For about $25 dollars you get to watch the best sporting event in the city: your pride and joy and their friends having a ball playing soccer!
