The Good of the Game

Celebrating each other, good sportsmanship, and everything wonderful about city tournament and our SYSA community!

Monday, December 11th

  • GU13: Incredible tough fought game. Exactly what the tourney is designed for.

  • GU13: Amazing game against MBL Blue Storm whom we played and tied twice in the regular season. And we tied again after regular playtime so penalties had to decide the winner. Thanks for a great game Blue Storm!

  • GU13: Referee Kevin and his lineswomen Victoria and Sophie did an awesome job. Thank you!

  • GU12: What a great matchup between two talented teams, and a shame that PKs had to be how we decide a winner. Tremendous cheering and family support from the sidelines, making Ballard and Shoreline proud.

Sat & Sun, December 9th and 10th

  • GU16: Great weather, very professional referees. Fun match, well played.

  • BU15: Massive compliments to the Red Dragons. This game is what rec soccer is all about. Strong play and competition, complemented by good sportsmanship and mutual respect. This is a well coached team and the game could have gone either way.

  • BU15: The “LVR Derby” was a very competitive game from start to end from both teams. I think this game captures what the beautiful game is all about. Both sides fought hard until the final whistle. The atmosphere was competitive yet respectful. We wish the Strikers good luck in the final and hope to see them again in the final and for future seasons to come!

  • BU15: The referee team was excellent this game. We don’t often hear the kids on the sideline say “wow, this ref is really good”.

  • BU15: Great referee crew today. Thank you!

  • GU14: The Lightning Hawks put up some impressive defensive stops and they kept us on our toes with clean passes and lots of speed.

  • GU14: Another big neighborhood rivalry match for the Hurricanes vs. the Orcas. Ballard is fortunate to have great coaching staffs for all 4 of our GU14 teams. This game could have gone either way with balls missing by less than a foot for both teams that could have ended the game in regulation. The Orcas' goalie was absolutely fantastic and helped earn the game going all the way to PKs in the end.

  • BU14: Good, hard fought clean game between two evenly matched teams. Rebel Alliance were great sports in what was a tough way to close out the season.

  • GU13: Tough fought game in sleeting conditions for the Ballard girls. Both teams showed great heart in these freezing conditions. Proud to be part of such a great group of young ladies repping Ballard.

  • BU13: It was a well played defensive battle by both teams and ultimately came down to PKs.

  • GU11: Almost our entire team got to kick penalties this game. These were not wild misses by U11 players, the penalty kicks were good kicks being blocked by amazing diving saves by both goalies.  It was great to see both of them shine. Wish both teams could have won.

  • BU11: The ref Anna called a great game!!! It was a challenging 1 to 1 tie, Rainiers started off hot and scored in the first half. Bears were fortunate to connect for a tie with about 10 minutes left.  It was a physical contest that stayed fierce til the end. PKs went the Bears way with an outstanding goalie performance with 2 saves, Bears securing the win 4-2. Great game Rainiers and thank you SYSA for an awesome tournament.

  • BU11: What an exciting tournament game, ending in PKs! Both teams worked hard and played their best until the final whistle. It was a very competitive but fun and positive game, with great sportsmanship across both teams. Thanks to our ref for calling a fair game, including clear communication before and throughout the match.

  • BU11: We want to thank the Rebels and congratulate them on a fantastic tournament and season!  Thanks again to the league for the high level of play and the exciting atmosphere.

  • BU11: Thanks for having us and we can't wait for the next one!

Thursday, December 7th

  • GU14: Good of the game was the ref commending both teams afterwards that he was very impressed by all the girls’ sportsmanship. Love that!

  • GU14: This was a tight game. The second goal was scored on the final minutes so it was close the entire game. We’ve played the Bolts for years, and we trade wins. This one went our way, but I’m sure they will give us trouble next year. Good game Bolts.

  • BU13: Thanks for a great season! It was so wonderful to play our last game against Queen Anne. Such kind boys and coaches. Always a pleasure to play gracious winners!

  • BU13: Thanks to Ref Jonathan for putting in the miles tonight- he called a great game with a crew of one!

  • GU11: It was a closely contested match, with both teams putting in a strong defensive effort with an aggressive high press. Good sportsmanship all around from both teams during the game, too.

  • BU11: Our opponents the Firestars always play a tough game and we were excited to have an opportunity to play them twice this year and split games.  Our ref Nick was very friendly and well organized. Another great game under the lights Let’s go Bears!!!

Wednesday, December 6th

  • GU13: Very hard fought, competitive game.

  • GU13: There was this moment at the beginning of the game when the two goalkeepers walked past each other to their goals, and they high-fived each other.  Sportsmanship at its best!

  • GU13: A great game against LC Fighting Squirrel Storm in misty Shoreline. It was an absolute luxury to have a three-person referee team. Kristen and her linemen Dustin and Bob were competent and did an outstanding job. They made sure everything was going well and had a great attitude. Thank you very much!

  • GU13: I appreciated the Laser Cats coach hustling his players off the field during substitutions even though his team was ahead. Very classy.

  • BU14: Queen Anne Soccer Eagles players and coaches were incredibly gracious and supportive in defeat. Hard fought battle after playing 3 times this year and they were class throughout.

  • BU11: This was a really fun and well organized game. Both teams worked hard from start to finish, with great sportsmanship and friendly competition. The field was great (especially considering the weather) and the officiating was top notch. We'd love to thank our ref, Michael for his professionalism and positive attitude. He was helpful and attentive with coaches and players from pre-game check-in all the way until the final whistle. Thank you Michael!

  • BU16: This was a hard fought but clean game that was a lot closer than the score reflects. When it was 2-1 with 20 minutes left in the game you could hear both parent sidelines across the field, it wasn’t “that parent” yelling at a kid, coach, or ref. It was all positive encouragement on both sides, to the point that when one of our kids subbed out he smiled and said, “man, there are some intense parents out there,” [but in a good way].

  • BU16: After the game was over our team was slow to huddle up. When I looked more closely to see why they weren’t moving quicker I noticed that it was because a number of our players were chatting with and fist-bumping with the Warrior players. It was nice to see kids giving each other props that they initiated before the formal end-of-game high fives.

  •  BU16: I commented to one of our players that it looked like there were some positive interactions on the field despite the high stakes of the game and he responded, “oh tons!” What I love about soccer in general, but rec soccer especially, is that kids can enjoy the game and other regardless of what is happening with the score. Props to the Warriors for keeping it fun!

  • GU12: That was an absolutely epic battle. The epitome of knockout soccer, both teams 100% commitment. It was as exciting as any game of soccer I’ve seen. Both teams should be proud of their performance, very well done.

Tuesday, December 5th

  • BU11:The ref Peter was great with the kids and kept the game fun. The atmospheric river didn’t get in the way of the action! Playing at Interbay stadium was an exceptional opportunity for the kids who were in awe.

  • BU11: It was a well played game on both sides. The FireStars went up early 1-0, but the Blazers scored it back to tied shortly after. The intensity was high and the turf was wet. The Blazers scored a second goal before half. The second half saw the FireStars starting to lose steam while the Blazers kept up the pressure. The Blazers scored 3 more by the end of the game.

  • BU13: The QA Leopards prevailed over the BAL Laser Cats tonight in a shoot out after tying 1-1 in regular time. The shootout closed at a fine margin of 5-4 which truly reflected the intensity and fair competition in the game.

  • BU13: The BAL Laser Cats played a great game and were a strong opponent with excellent sportsmanship. Many thanks to the referees who officiated in the pouring rain!

  • BU13: Very fair game and compliments to the Laser Cats for a very composed team performance, excellent passing, and great sportsmanship.

  • GU14: Even though the Amazing Jaguars had a lot of U13 players playing up, they competed and played with heart the whole game. Both teams had fun and we look forward to playing them next season. Kudos to the coaches for leading a positive and fun team. Way to play Amazing Jaguars!

  • GU11: The Leopards came up with some impressive goals and great stops on defense to end our season. Best of luck in the rest of the tournament.

  • GU16: Pouring down rain and short handed, the Eagles played hard and never gave up. Hats off to their fighting spirit, and a well deserved goal.

Sunday, December 3rd

  • BU16: Early in the game the Fire Dragons had the ball down on our end and one of our defending players lost his shoe. When he stopped to put it on one of the Fire Dragons attacking players said something like, “let me help you tie it because it’s only fair if we are both out.” You can’t ask for a better demonstration of what rec soccer should be about than that!

Saturday, December 2nd

  • GU12: Panthers forfeited as they didn’t have enough players, but we played a great scrimmage with shared players and everybody had fun despite the rain and wind. Proud of everybody’s great attitudes.

  • BU11: We managed to avoid the rain! Thanks again to our terrific, young ref who did a great job.

  • GU11: Close game with great sportsmanship on both sides. That’s it for us in the tournament.

  • GU14: The Bolts put up a great defensive effort and their goalie made many impressive stops to keep the game close until the end.

Friday, December 1st

  • GU16: Competitive match, well played, great refs. Hats off to the Flash; hope to see you all again soon!

  • BU14: It was a fun and well played game by both teams. A very clean and respectful game by all players, coaches and officials.

  • BU15:  A hard fought game on both sides, and the Thunder Sharks come away with the victory.

  • BU13: Sonic Blues won 3-1. Another strong ref team. More fun under the lights!

Thursday, November 30th

  • It was a great first game of the tournament. Both teams played with a lot of heart and sportsmanship. Weather was cold and rainy. Hats off the refs, players, and parents who braved the weather to play and cheer an inspired tournament game.

  • The Banana Boys goaltender was great - making incredible saves.  Also, Banana Boys #2 was an excellent player with great footwork and skill.

  • Good of the game: hot chocolate afterwards!!!!

  • The group of refs were fantastic and it was a very close, well played game on both sides.

  • Great job by the ref crew, particularly the center ref, who was good about explaining his calls to the kids.

Wednesday, November 29th

  • The WD SDHF squad is our favorite; lots of positive energy. Players from SDHF noticed Team Magnificent munching orange wedges at halftime, and said, "Ooh, those look good! Could we have some?" And of course we shared. Referees were professional, in control, and called a great game. Highly competitive, fabulous defensive play by SDHF, and a bit of a nail biter for us as Team Magnificent trying to hold on to the one goal lead to the end. Fun!

  • A hard fought game from start to finish with some excellent attacking football on both sides of the pitch. Lots of chances created by both teams and I think everyone watching was a little surprised to see only one goal in the end.

  • Exciting game, great hustle by Magnolia. Very even.

  • Best play of the game was by a Dragon defender. Ball got popped over the goalkeeper and was going in. A defender sprinted back, slid and kicked the ball out. Fantastic hustle.

  • It was great to have 2 line judges for the first time this year!  We had a well reffed, clean game and the Laser Cats put up a good game with the first goal.

  • It was an evenly matched, very competitive game with great camaraderie between the teams - hard fought and super fun.

  • Thanks to the SYSA reps at Woodland Park. They were particularly helpful for explaining field setup to those of us that haven't played with the two-field configuration there before.

  • We always enjoy playing the Sonic Blues. High quality team with excellent sportsmanship.

  • Very exciting, excellent sportsmanship by both teams. Ref was fair and engaged in the game.

Tuesday, November 28th

  • Good of the game was the Orcas' incredible goalkeeper. WOW... she must have saved 20 goals. The Raptors were both frustrated and highly impressed with her skills :) They also had a player go down in the 2nd half with what looked like a twisted ankle, and she hopped the handshake line on one foot at the end of the game. Pretty awesome of her!

  • The game gets more physical as kids get older, so it was nice to see players check on each other after plays. Great sportsmanship.

  • We had a great reffing crew. It's always hard to run a good shootout, but they did a top-notch job of walking all the players through that protocol. Thank you refs! Also big kudos to all the Lightning Hawks for a fantastic and hard-fought game. We love our neighborhood club rivalries, but we also have a lot of friends on those teams and wish them well for the rest of the tourney.

  • Fun game all around even though we came up on the short end. Really nice to have a full refereeing crew and they took really good control of the game.

  • Referee Ashton and his team did a great job on the pitch. Great game between the WD Girls United and the LVR Unicorns FC.

  • Despite the chilly night, both teams had a great showing of spectators ready to cheer on our players!  Happy this year is dry!

  • Great game by both teams. The Golden Warriors did a great job hustling and playing with intensity. The ref did a great job.

  • Both teams had smiles the whole game even when it was tough. It was a well fought game by both teams!

  •  It was the fourth meeting between these two teams this season and the first tournament game this season for both, played under the lights in Shoreline. These two teams have always enjoyed fair engaged matches and this tournament game!

  • First tournament game under lights for all of our girls.  They were so excited playing under the lights. They ran so much more than any game yet.

  • The game was a ton of fun, a lot of positive competitive play and fantastic sportsmanship between players and coaches. It really had a tournament atmosphere and the officials called a fair match.  Congrats to the Golden Goals on the amazing comeback win! Looking forward to the next game.

  • A thrilling U11 City Tournament match under the lights. The Fire Ravens competed until the final whistle. They displayed exceptional skill and sportsmanship, making the match a true testament to the spirit of the game.

  • Great spirited game in the cold. Kudos to our young ref, who did an outstanding job!

  • My daughter says that the ref for GU11 Thunder Wolves (vs Little Dragons) was really nice. “She was always smiling and complimented us on good plays or passes.” She also complimented the girls on sportsmanship!! I think she was a great role model for soccer!

  • Another epic battle between these two storied rivals, who played each other in the BU11 Silver Championship Game in 2022. In tonight’s matchup, the Bombers jumped out to an early lead at the 5’ mark. Both teams battled back and forth throughout and the next goal didn’t come until minute 45, when the Rocket Turtles blasted a shot from beyond the box that flew into the goal just below the crossbar. Staying true to this tactic, the Rocket Turtles took advantage of a loose ball near the goal and sent in a left footed beauty to the top left corner, and earned the 2-1 advantage at minute 55.

Not to be outdone, the Bombers dug deep, and in 60th (and final) minute, played a beautiful ball through the defense and finished the ball just to the side of the diving keeper, and it bounced off the left post and into the goal. What an exciting finish! On to PKs!

During penalty kicks, the Rocket Turtles went a perfect 4 for 4 which sealed the deal and completed this next chapter of the Rocket Turtles / Bombers rivalry. Let’s hope we meet in the finals again!!!!

Monday, November 27th

  • Field was in great shape and it was really cool to play on turf under the lights!

  • The game under the lights and in the cold was a great experience for our team. The air was crisp, the ball stung a bit more than usual, and so did the loss. Anytime our team can get extra touches and gameplay it benefits our players and they kept a great attitude throughout. Looking forward to our next tournament match on Sunday!

  • We had a great ref! They called the game fair, but also let the kids play. We couldn't be more appreciative.

  • Our referee, Eli, did a great job. Eli had been sick earlier in the day but he showed up and called a very clean, even game. The Raniers had some great attacks, our defense and our goalie played great but we couldn't hold them off forever and they had 2 great goals.  Our Dragons had a few good attacks with a few near misses.  Most of our boys were very cold but still smiling and working hard.

  • The young referees did a great job. The Red Hot Tigers had a positive attitude and got a goal late on in the game. We played them twice in the tournament last season and they came back both times to take the game to penalties. They have a great team, and we hope to see them again next year.

  • Freezing cold conditions Monday night with the ball slipping and sliding all over the place. Hats off to the Fireballs for a terrific game and never giving up. Well coached team and outstanding goalkeeping.

  • The Thunder Sharks jumped out to a quick lead with a breakaway goal at the 5’ mark. The Thunder Sharks striker poked the ball around the charging Sooceroos keeper, and knocked it through. The game got really tight from then on out with no goals for the rest of the half and all the way to the 56th minute, when the Socceroos finally put one through on a shot from the left side that deflected off a defender. From then on the Socceroos found a rhythm, and added four more goals at minutes 63, 66, 70, and 77…the best of which was a beautiful high cross from the right side that the Socceroos striker finished with a clean header into the top left of the goal. Hard fought game on a clear, frigid night. Frost on the field as the players shook hands at the end.

  • Gummy Bears had some excellent passing. Panther's GK made some great saves.

  • Our game this evening vs the Bryant Bears went well. Our referee was great, fair, and professional. Our opponents gave us a really good match and we applaud their efforts.
